What you will see

Pick the stops you like. Ernest suggests an order that avoids the busiest hours.

  • Tegallalang rice terraces

Green terraces on both sides of a valley north of Ubud, watered by the centuries-old subak irrigation system. Walk down between the paddies; it is quietest early in the morning.

  • Tirta Empul water temple

A holy spring where Balinese families come to bathe and pray. You can join the purification ritual in the stone pools; Ernest explains what each fountain means.

  • Celuk, Mas and Batuan

Three villages known for silver jewellery, woodcarving and traditional painting. Watch the craftsmen at work and buy directly from the makers.

  • Ubud Monkey Forest

A jungle sanctuary with moss-covered temples and hundreds of long-tailed macaques. Keep sunglasses, snacks and loose bags out of reach.

  • Ubud Palace and art market

The heart of Ubud, with the royal palace, galleries and a busy market for crafts, sarongs and souvenirs.

  • Kite making

Build a traditional Balinese kite with a local maker and learn how the giant kites of the Bali kite festivals are made. A favourite with children.
