What you will see

East Bali is greener, drier and quieter than the south, with Mount Agung, Bali's highest volcano, always in view.

  • Lempuyang temple gates

    The famous split gate on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang, with Mount Agung framed between the two halves on a clear morning. Expect a queue for the photo; Ernest gets you there early.

  • Tirta Gangga water palace

    A former royal water garden with ponds, fountains and stepping stones between the koi fish.

  • Taman Ujung

    Another royal water palace, with large pools and pavilions close to the sea.

  • Sidemen valley

    Rice terraces and weaving villages in a quiet valley below the volcano.

  • Amed

    Fishing villages with black sand beaches, traditional salt making and coral reefs right off the shore. Snorkel straight from the beach.

  • Tulamben

    The wreck of the USAT Liberty, a cargo ship from the Second World War, lies in shallow water just off the beach. A world-famous dive site that snorkellers can see too.
